SCI – MTIGP Rating course leading to 2nd Mate
NCV comprises of pre-sea training of 06 months at MTI, Mumbai’s & structured shipboard training of 18 months thereafter on ships operated by SCI
The Maritime Training Institute in Mumbai offers a 6-month pre-sea General Purpose Rating (GP-Rating) course, approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. Graduates join the SCI fleet as trainee GP-Ratings and, after 18 months of sea service, can qualify for the Second Mate (Near Coastal Vessel) course, leading to a Certificate of Competency (COC).
Job Prospects
The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) clarifies that candidates selected for shipboard training receive a one-time opportunity only. SCI or its subsidiary SCILAL holds no obligation or guarantee for future employment or extensions of the training beyond this initial period.
Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for candidates include: passing 10th grade with at least 40% aggregate and 50% in English (in 10th/12th), or passing 12th grade with 40% aggregate and 50% in English. Alternatively, candidates can complete a 2-year ITI course with 40% marks and 50% in English. SC/ST candidates receive a 5% relaxation in overall marks, while English relaxation applies to native Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar candidates from Scheduled Tribes. Candidates must have specific visual standards and be unmarried. Preference is given to 12th-grade science stream students with 50% aggregate.
Age Requirement
Candidates seeking admission, as per DG Shipping rules, must be 18-25 years old, with relaxation: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (NCL), and 2 years extra for female candidates.
Reservation of Seats
A total of 40 seats are available, divided as follows: 16 Unreserved (UR), 4 Economically Weaker Section (EWS), 11 OBC-NCL, 6 Scheduled Caste (SC), and 3 Scheduled Tribe (ST).
Course Fees
Training fees at SCILAL-MTI Mumbai are Rs. 4,50,000 for males and Rs. 3,60,000 for females. A monthly stipend of Rs. 10,000 is provided during shipboard training only.
Medical Standard
Candidates must meet MS Medical Rules 2000/MLC 2006 for seafarers, undergo medical checks by DGS-approved doctors, and bear the examination costs. No waivers allowed.
Selection Criteria
Eligible candidates must physically attend an online exam at designated centers in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, or Chennai, covering their own expenses. Successful candidates will be called for personal interviews in a 1:3 ratio, with reservations for specific categories. SCILAL reserves the right to shortlist candidates without notice.
About the online examination: The examination lasts two hours and consists of multiple-choice questions covering Professional Knowledge, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability, available in English and Hindi. Only eligible candidates will be informed of the online test details, and valid documentation is required for personal interviews. SCILAL reserves the right to alter examination procedures without notice.
Application Fees
General, OBC-NCL, and EWS candidates must pay INR 1,000, while SC, ST, and female candidates pay INR 700, both excluding applicable payment gateway transaction charges.
Interview Schedule
Shortlisted candidates for interviews will be posted on the MTI website at https://www.mti.shipindia.com/notification, with interviews held in Mumbai. SCILAL reserves the right to change processes, dates, or venues without notice.
Selection procedure, online examination and interview schedule: The online examination is tentatively scheduled for November 10, 2024, at 10:30 hrs, with candidates covering all expenses. Shortlisting is based on exam scores, and interviews will occur in December 2024. Selected candidates must also undergo a medical fitness test, with expenses borne by them. More details will be provided on the website.

Applications for SCILAL-MTI will be accepted online from 08.10.2024 (10:00 hrs) to 03.11.2024 (23:59 hrs). The application fee is INR 1,000 for General (UR), OBC-NCL, and EWS candidates, and INR 700 for SC, ST, and Female candidates. Eligible candidates must appear physically at examination centers and provide a valid email and mobile number for communication. Detailed instructions for filling the application are available under “General Instructions.” Candidates must download a printout of their application and keep a copy of the bank transaction receipt.
