Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) – Maritime Training Institute (MTI)
Syllabus (Entrance Exam): 2-hour online MCQ test covering Professional Knowledge (basic maritime and safety concepts), English language, quantitative aptitude (10th-standard math), and reasoning ability
Selection Procedure: Candidates apply online and take the online exam, and the top 3× candidates per vacancy are called for personal interviews. Interviews are held in Mumbai. Finally, qualifying candidates undergo a DGS‑approved medical exam
Eligibility: Must have passed 10th standard with ≥40% (including English, Math, Science; English ≥40%), or 12th with ≥40% (with English ≥40% and Math and Science in 10th), or a 2‑year ITI (fitter/machinist/etc.) with ≥40% (and English ≥40%) Unmarried males aged 17.5–28 years . Preference given to PCM stream.
Physical/Medical Standards: Good health fit for sea service Eyesight 6/6 (better eye) and 6/9 (other eye) with normal color vision. Medical exam by a DGS‑approved doctor; no waivers.
Syllabus (Entrance Exam): IMI’s written test assesses basic concept clarity in English, mathematics, and science (at about the 10th‑standard level). Official details aren’t published, but candidates are advised to revise these subjects
Selection Procedure: IMI follows a multi-step process: 1) Registration (contact IMI). 2) Written Entrance Exam: tests candidates’ basic knowledge/concepts 3) Personal Interview: evaluates confidence and suitability. 4) Medical Exam: final step by a DGS-approved doctor. Eligibility: 10th pass (any stream) or 12th pass. Must have ≥50% in Mathematics & Science (in 10th) and ≥50% in PCM (in 12th) and ≥50% in English (10th or 12th) Age 17½–25 years at course start (No open/distance schooling; improvement exam results generally not accepted.)
Physical/Medical Standards: Height ≥157 cm; BMI ≤25 No speech impediment. Eyesight 6/6 (both eyes) without aid, no color blindness. Medically fit as per DG Shipping.
Important Dates: IMI conducts GP Rating courses twice yearly (January and July intakes) Applicants should watch IMI’s announcements, typically opening seats a few months before these intakes.
Training Ship Rahaman (TS Rahaman), Mumbai
Syllabus (Entrance Exam): Written exam (100 marks) divided into English (grammar/comprehension) 50 marks, Mathematics 30 marks, and General Knowledge 20 marks. (Questions are basic level, ~up to 10th standard.)
Selection Procedure: Candidates submit the application form with the Xth marksheet and other documents. TS staff calls shortlisted candidates for a written test, followed by a personal interview Final admission is based on the entrance exam merit list. A DGS medical exam is done after selection.
Eligibility: 10th pass (Govt. board) with ≥40% aggregate (incl. English, Maths, Science) AND English ≥40% (10th/12th); OR 12th pass (any stream) with ≥40% aggregate (and English ≥40%); OR 2‑year ITI pass with ≥40% aggregate (engineering trades). Female candidates are eligible.
Age: 17½ to 25 years on course start. Age relaxations: +5 years for SC/ST, +3 years for OBC‑NCL, and +2 years for women and degree holders.
Physical/Medical Standards: Distance vision 6/6 (better eye) and 6/9 (other) with normal color vision. Medical fitness certificate from a DGS‑approved doctor. Candidates must also hold a valid passport (INDOS number required at interview).
NUSI Maritime Academy, Goa
Syllabus (Entrance Exam): Written exam and oral test cover English grammar, Mathematics, general science, and GK (syllabus up to 10th standard) Both exams are in English.
Selection Procedure: Candidates apply when the academy announces forms (typically late January and late July each year). Selection is by written test (English, math, science, GK) plus an oral interview/test on the same subjects. Shortlisted candidates are then medically examined by a DGS-approved doctor.
Eligibility: 10th pass (Govt. board) with ≥40% aggregate (incl. English, Maths, Science) and English ≥40%; OR 12th pass (any stream) with ≥40% aggregate (and English ≥40%); OR a 2‑year ITI pass with ≥40% (engineering trades). (English ≥50% if previous education was in a regional language.)
Age: 18 to 25 years on entry (candidates born on or after 1 Jan/1 Jul of the relevant year).
Physical/Medical Standards: Minimum height 158 cm; BMI between 20 and 30. Distance vision 6/6 (better eye) and 6/9 (other), no squint, and normal color vision. No speech defects. Medically fit for sea service (no waivers). A valid passport (valid ≥2 years beyond the course) is compulsory.
Important Dates: NUSI offers GP batches starting 1 January and 1 July each year. Application forms are typically released online in the last week of January (for Jan intake) and the last week of July (for Jul intake).
