Detailed Syllabus

 

The curriculum follows the latest DG Shipping (India) guidelines and STCW 2010 amendments.

 

Part A: General Ship Knowledge (GSK) – Deck Department

 

Focuses on navigation, seamanship, and deck operations.

  1. General Ship Familiarization: Types of ships, ship layout, and terminology.

  2. Navigation & Watchkeeping: Basics of navigation, compasses (Gyro/Magnetic), steering, and lookout duties.

  3. Seamanship & Deck Work: Ropes and knots, splicing, anchoring, mooring, and berthing operations.

  4. Cargo Handling: Safe loading/unloading, crane signals, and stowage plans.

  5. Maintenance: De-rusting, painting, and deck maintenance procedures.

  6. Flag Signals & Meteorology: Understanding international code flags and basic weather reading.

  7. Survival & Safety: Life-saving appliances (LSA), fire-fighting appliances (FFA), and abandon ship drills.

 

Part B: Marine Engineering Knowledge (MEK) – Engine Department

 

Focuses on engine room machinery, maintenance, and workshop skills.

  1. Engine Room Familiarization: Layout of the engine room, watchkeeping duties, and safety zones.

  2. Internal Combustion Engines: Working principles of 2-stroke and 4-stroke diesel engines.

  3. Auxiliary Machinery: Pumps, valves, air compressors, purifiers, and oily water separators.

  4. Boilers: Types of boilers, mounting, and steam generation basics.

  5. Electrical Safety: Basics of AC/DC, batteries, lighting, and safe handling of electrical equipment.

  6. Workshop Technology: Welding (Arc/Gas), cutting, lathe machine operation, and hand tools usage.

  7. Emergency Procedures: Engine room flooding, fire in the engine room, and black-out procedures.

 

Eligibility Criteria (For Pre-Sea Training Admission)

 

Note: This course helps you pass the training, but to enroll in an institute, you typically need:

  • Age: Between 17.5 and 25 years.

  • Education:

    • Passed 10th Standard with Science & Math (Min 40% aggregate).

    • OR Passed 2-Year ITI Course (Fitter/Machinist/Welder etc.) with min 50% aggregate.

    • OR Passed 12th Standard (Any Stream) with min 40% aggregate.

    • Note: Minimum 40% marks in English is mandatory in 10th or 12th.

  • Medical: Physically fit with 6/6 vision in both eyes (No Color Blindness).

 

Career Path & Future Scope

 

Upon successful completion of the 6-month pre-sea training and passing the All India Exit Exam, you will receive your Indian CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate).

  1. Entry Level: Join as a Trainee GP Rating (Deck or Engine side).

  2. Promotion 1: After 6-9 months of sea service $rightarrow$ Ordinary Seaman (OS) or Wiper.

  3. Promotion 2: After 12-18 months sea time + COP Exam $rightarrow$ Able Seaman (AB) or Motorman/Oiler.

  4. Senior Rating: Bosun (Head of Deck Crew) or Pumpman (Tankers).

  5. Officer Level: With 36 months of sea service, you can appear for the 2nd Mate or Class 4 Engineer exams to become an officer.
